WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE SAI?

The Sexual Adjustment Inventory (SAI) is designed to identify sexually deviate and paraphiliac behavior in people (male and female) accused or convicted of sexual offenses. The SAI is a comprehensive sex offender assessment instrument or test. It has been standardized on thousands of sex offenders. The SAI has many unique and innovative features, some of which are briefly described here.

UNIQUE SAI FEATURES

1. The SAI is specifically designed for sex offender assessment. The SAI was developed and is maintained by staff with over 30 years' sex offender evaluation experience. There are six sex-related scales: 1. Sex Item Truthfulness, 2. Sexual Adjustment, 3. Child (Pedophile) Molest, 4. Sexual (Rape) Assault, 5. Exhibitionism, and 6. Incest Classification. There are also seven non-sex related scales: 7. Test Item Truthfulness, 8. Alcohol, 9. Drugs, 10. Violence, 11. Antisocial, 12. Distress, and 13. Impulsiveness.

2. The SAI contains two truthfulness scales. The Sex Item Truthfulness Scale measures how truthful the client was while answering sex-related questions. The Test Item Truthfulness Scale also measures how truthful the client was while answering non-sex related questions. These two proprietary truthfulness scales are very important when evaluating sex offenders. Many people accused of sex offenses are aware of the severe penalties associated with admissions, let alone sex offender convictions. These individuals attempt to minimize, rationalize and deny their sexual interests and behavior. This is one of several reasons why sex offender interviews are so lacking and unproductive. Fortunately the MMPI's introduction of the "Truthfulness Scale" enabled test developers to account for a client's minimization, denial and attempts to fake good. The SAI's Sex Item Truthfulness Scale determines if (and to what extent) the respondent was minimizing or lying when answering sex-related items. And the SAI's Test Item Truthfulness Scale measures the extent to which the respondent was minimizing or lying to non-sex-related items. These two Truthfulness Scales have impressive reliability, validity and accuracy. By clicking on the SAI Research Study link you can review this research.

3. Truth-Corrected scores are very important for assessment accuracy. This proprietary truth correction program is comparable to the MMPI K-Scale correction. Truth-Corrected scores are more accurate than raw scores. The more a person lies or attempts to fake good, the more truth correction applies.

4. The SAI can be administered in three different ways: 1. Paper-pencil test administration. Tests can be given individually or in groups. 2. On the computer screen (monitor). Computer screen administration is faster, but limited to one person at a time at the computer. 3. Human Voice Audio involves earphones, a computer and simple up-down arrow key instructions. This approach helps overcome some cultural, reading impaired and bilingual language problems. Human voice audio is available in English and Spanish. It is an understatement to note the need for accuracy in sex offender assessment. SAI test users can administer tests in any or all three modalities.

5. Reading impaired assessment: Approximately 20+ percent of sex offenders are reading impaired. Risk & Needs Assessment, Inc. (Risk & Needs) developed Human Voice Audio to help resolve this problem. In brief, the SAI is read to the client via the computer in English or Spanish.

6. The SAI has an expanding database. Essentially every SAI that is administered is stored in the SAI database. This database is important because it enables ongoing research and the preparation of annual testing program summary reports – at no additional cost to test users.

7. The SAI has been modified for juvenile use. The SAI-Juvenile has all the SAI’s unique features. Some of the SAI vocabulary was simplified and/or modified for juvenile use. The SAI-Juvenile is designed to identify sexually deviate and paraphiliac behavior in juveniles. The SAI-Juvenile is listed on the alphabetical listing of tests webpage and the tests functionally grouped webpage. Or, you can click on the SAI-Juvenile webpage link.

8. SAI research is represented in the document "SAI: An Inventory of Scientific Findings." The SAI has very impressive reliability, validity and accuracy. SAI research can be provided upon request.

An SAI research study is presented at the end of this webpage. And, if desired, you can go directly to it by clicking on the SAI Research Study link.

In conclusion, the Sexual Adjustment Inventory, or SAI, identifies sexually deviate and paraphiliac behavior in people accused or convicted of sexual offenses. There is an adult SAI and a juvenile version designated the SAI-Juvenile. If you are selecting a sex offender (male and female) assessment instrument or test, we recommend you consider the Sexual Adjustment Inventory.
