DRIVERS LICENSE REINSTATEMENT

Driver’s License Reinstatement

The Reinstatement Review Inventory (RRI) is for screening or evaluating people applying for reinstatement of their drivers’ licenses, which were suspended or revoked. The RRI is an automated (computer-scored) assessment instrument or test.

States' driver’s license reinstatement procedures vary. However, for whatever reason, the applicant’s driver's license was suspended or revoked. Reinstatement typically is handled in accordance with court procedures. A focal concern is "Has the applicant positively changed their attitude, behavior and lifestyle since their driver’s license was suspended or revoked?" The RRI explores this important area of inquiry.

Differences between the RRI and the RRI-II.

The RRI-II replaced the Road Rage Scale with the Stress Coping Abilities Scale. "Road rage" refers to violent anger, e.g., a driver acts or speaks with unabated anger. The driver’s emotions interfere with their judgment. In contrast, stress coping abilities refer to how well the applicant copes with or handles stress. Stress exacerbates emotional or mental health problems. A Stress Coping Abilities Scale score at the 90th percentile or above indicates the presence of a diagnosable mental health (DSM-IV) disorder. In these cases, the applicant might be referred to a certified/ licensed mental health professional for an evaluation, diagnosis and written treatment plan.

If you’re looking for an empirically based driver’s license reinstatement test, we recommend you consider either the RRI or the RRI-II. The RRI has the Road Rage Scale; whereas, the RRI-II replaced the Road Rage Scale with the Stress Coping Abilities Scale.

To help make a comparison of these two driver's license reinstatement tests easier, a link to each test is provided. If you would like to review the RRI-II, click on the RRI-II webpage link. Otherwise, you are on the RRI webpage.
