RISK & NEEDS TESTS FUNCTIONALLY GROUPED
HOW TO SELECT A TEST FOR YOUR NEEDS
There are many ways to approach test selection. We recommend you begin by defining or conceptualizing the people you want to evaluate, assess or screen. Then, decide what you want to know about them. Clearly decide if you want to use an objective test, subjective interview, or your own intuition. Is it important to know if they (clients) are truthful when tested? Are you interested in their substance (alcohol or other drugs) use or abuse? What other attitudes or behaviors do you want to know about? When you have answered these questions, you are ready to begin your search.
What test characteristics are important in test selection? You might begin with a tests reading level, administration time and usefulness of test results. Are reports helpful and easy to understand? Ask for the tests standardization data, and review its reliability, validity and accuracy. Test research should be provided upon request.
Practical considerations usually include cost, experience of the test publisher and support services. If you want summary reports on the tests you administer, you will need a built-in database. Ongoing research is another consideration.
Hopefully the Risk & Needs Assessment, Inc. (Risk & Needs) website will be helpful to you. Remember, additional information can be provided upon request. Our test-related consultation (telephone, fax, and e-mail) services are provided free -- or at no cost to you.
