RISK & NEEDS TESTS FUNCTIONALLY GROUPED

HOW TO SELECT A TEST FOR YOUR NEEDS

There are many ways to approach test selection.  We recommend you begin by defining or conceptualizing the people you want to evaluate, assess or screen.  Then, decide what you want to know about them.  Clearly decide if you want to use an objective test, subjective interview, or your own intuition.  Is it important to know if they (clients) are truthful when tested?  Are you interested in their substance (alcohol or other drugs) use or abuse?  What other attitudes or behaviors do you want to know about?  When you have answered these questions, you are ready to begin your search.

What test characteristics are important in test selection?  You might begin with a tests reading level, administration time and usefulness of test results.  Are reports helpful and easy to understand?  Ask for the tests standardization data, and review its reliability, validity and accuracy.  Test research should be provided upon request.

Practical considerations usually include cost, experience of the test publisher and support services.  If you want summary reports on the tests you administer, you will need a built-in database.  Ongoing research is another consideration.

Hopefully the Risk & Needs Assessment, Inc. (Risk & Needs) website will be helpful to you.  Remember, additional information can be provided upon request.  Our test-related consultation (telephone, fax, and e-mail) services are provided free -- or at no cost to you.

CLARIFICATION: In the preceding test classification, abbreviated test names are followed by the test's full name. For example, the acronym "DVI-Juvenile" is followed by "Domestic Violence Inventory." Since these tests' names are not links they are in black and there is not a line under them.

There are many ways tests can be grouped, sorted and arranged. The above groupings were used because of their simplicity. These groupings represent settings in which tests are administered. All of Risk & Needs' assessment instruments or tests are automated (computer-scored) and appropriate for evaluating both men and women. And, the court, probation department and corrections tests have been standardized on both misdemeanor and felony cases.

Other distinguishing or characteristic Risk & Needs test features include inclusion of the Truthfulness Scale and Truth-Corrected scores. The Truthfulness Scale includes items that the overwhelming majority of clients answer true or false. This scale is similar in many respects to the MMPI's L, F and K-Scales. The Truthfulness Scale measures the respondent's honesty, openness or truthfulness while completing the test. Or, said another way, the Truthfulness Scale measures client truthfulness, denial, problem minimization and attempts to fake good. Truthfulness Scale reliability and validity is discussed on each test's webpage. College students were asked to "lie but in such a way that they wouldn't be caught," and they were detected. The Truthfulness Scale has impressively demonstrated reliability and validity. And, the Truthfulness Scale has been studied in terms of its correlation with all other test scales, which enables the calculation of Truth-Corrected scores. Raw test scores may reflect what the client wants the evaluator to know. Truth-Corrected scores reveal what the client wants to minimize or even hide. Truth-Corrected scores are more accurate than raw scores.
